Hunt (1991) also highlights that at the informal lunch/dinner parties nonviolent drunken behaviour is acceptable but at formal parties and dinner parties’ drunken behaviour was not acceptable. The more formal the event the more formal practices of alcohol consumption, aperitifs, wine with each course and drunkenness is frowned upon. Indeed, Hunt (1991) tells the story of one guest who drank too much whisky before dinner, while initially being ignored by the other guests, was excused by his wife on the grounds that he was having a hard day at the office when he fell asleep and started to snore at the dinner table.
It is clear that all that is involved in the ‘going out-ness’ of a drinking experience – the drama, the dressing up, the occupation of public space, of ‘proper’ streets and public squares and statues and the presence of crowds involved in ‘improper’ activities – is of central importance to a ‘big night out’ (see Hubbard 2002). In these terms, Merrifield (2000) rightly argues then, that urban space is kept alive by such practices. Indeed as Laurier and Philo (2004, 4) suggest, the ‘rumbustiousness of the crowd, as [well as] the self-interest of the individual are transformed into a new kind of sociality’, and that places such as café’s (or in terms of the topic at hand drinking establishments) provide space and support for communal life in the city.
Far than being homogenized by regeneration projects, drinking is a varied activity constructed through diverse practices and experiences. This point is elaborated in detail by Alan Latham (2003), who shows that an urban renaissance of Western industrialized urbanity has been robustly criticized by political economists who identify that the contemporary city is riddled with social division. Latham’s (2003, 1709) ethnographic study of two streets in Auckland, New Zealand uncovers a public culture that is underpinned by tolerance diversity and creative energy, with a mixing of post-industrial lifestyles, with sexually polymorphous and industrial male public cultures that inhabit hotels and pubs.
