Channels are directed from the receive beams to the required transmit beams by means of switching matrices which can be operated from the ground to suit the pattern of traffic. The total bandwidth provided by INTELSAT V is over 2000 MHz and the traffic capacity is (typically) 12000 telephone circuits plus two TV channels. 2. 3 Body stabilisation INTELSAT V is very different in shape from all the previous INTELSAT satellites. The body is a box about 1-7 x 2 x 1-8 m. The antennas are mounted on a tower and the total height of the satellite is about 6-5 m.

4 Earth stations The introduction of dual polarisation and the 14/11 GHz band produced problems for INTELSAT earth stations. Antennas fitted with dual-polar feeds became available several years before the first INTELSAT V was launched but it was necessary to modify antennas of earlier design so that they could receive and transmit both polarisations (or, if they were required to use only one polarisation, so that their transmissions did not interfere with transmissions by stations using the opposite polarisation).

The hemispheric beams give a coverage pattern which is suited to operation in all three ocean areas, but the zone coverage pattern required in the Indian Ocean Region is very different to that required in the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean Regions. Switches are therefore provided so that the array of feed horns can be configured to suit the different regions. These switches can be operated by command from the ground if the coverage pattern needs to be changed because the satellite is moved from one region to another.
