That’s where I was born. . ”1 Charles Hollis “Chuck” Taylor was born on June 24, 1901. That’s what it says on Taylor’s passport, which survives at Converse, Inc. headquarters in North Andover, Massachusetts.

That was basketball. Chuck proved to be a mainstay on the Columbus High School Bull Dogs from his rst day at the school, quickly nding a spot on the freshman team during the 1915–16 school year. Yet it was during the season of 1918–19, when he was just seventeen and captain of the team, that he and his mates made their true mark. The Bull Dogs went all the way to the State High School Athletic Association single-class boys basketball nals in West Lafayette that year, and along the way Chuck was to personally bump up against young men like Wells and Vandivier, future Hall of Famers like himself.
